On the Verge of Developing a New Lithium Brine District
Alset Energy Corp. (TSXV:ION) is a Canadian exploration junior with a focus on exploring and acquiring properties containing metals required by high tech industries, specifically lithium. Lithium-ion batteries which are rapidly becoming the technology of choice for the next generation of electric vehicles.
Tesla, the world’s largest lithium consumer, is keen to become the world’s largest lithium producer alongside the ramp up in its electric vehicle production. The EV manufacturers Gigafactory is slated to begin initial production of lithium-ion batteries in 2017. Once full production is reached in 2020, Tesla expects to produce more lithium-ion battery cells annually that were produced globally in 2013. Tesla has publicly stated that North America is its preferred source for lithium material.
Brines and spodumene (hard rock) represent the two main sources of commercial lithium production. Alset Energy is unique among many of its peers in the lithium space as it holds interests in both brine and spodumene projects, both in North America. Alset’s goal is to prove its assets have the potential to offer an alternative supply source outside of Nevada where constraints on water rights—crucial for lithium production—has become a hot button issue for the sector.
The company’s flagship exploration project in Mexico is showing early signs of being a completely new lithium brine district in the Central Mexican Plateau. Backed by a team of highly experienced advisors, Alset is gearing up for an aggressive exploration program on the Mexico concessions. The aim is to develop the properties into producing assets.
As the Mexico properties contain salars (or salt pans that remain from ancient inland seas) that are also rich in potassium, Alset offers an investment window on potash production in the future. This adds further potential to shareholder value given the current lack of domestic supply in Mexico.
