Theft of tantalite ore in Dar es Salaam is reportedly weighing on supply. Some market participants are said to have halted their shipments via the city’s port as they lack confidence about the security of their material.

The TIC has taken a strong stance on the matter and has said its members are obligated to help resolve the issue. Furthermore, the organization has vowed to take action against any of its members that are engaged in illegal activities.

Stolen metal is believed to be making its way into the supply pipeline in China. There are reports of tantalum oxide selling under $100/lb in China. However, the broader current price range is reported as being $125 to $127 per pound, with some reports as high as $132 per pound.
