Zimbabwe Likely to Leave Chrome Export Ban in Place

Bloomberg reported that Zimbabwe will probably leave its chrome export ban in place in order to force local producers to process the metal within the country. The country has three smelters that together have an annual processing capacity of 1.5 million metric tons of chrome.

As quoted in the market news:

“I don’t think we will even consider lifting the ban on chrome exports,” [Mines Minister Obert Mpofu] told a mining conference in Harare today. “We can only encourage development of refineries and smelters here. It is not a good strategy to allow raw exports of anything.”
